With the rapid development of computers many people upgrade their
computers and the old one just gets put into the garage or attic. This
old machine is still functioning and while it may not be terribly fast
it
is still useful to someone else.
One of the first ideas Neighbour Net had, some ten years ago
was to
recycle computers. There are people in the St Albans community for whom
the price of a new computer is a great deal of money, money they often
do not have. There are also older people who are not sure if they will
be able to use a computer and thus do not wish to spend on buying a
new one.
Neighbour Net accepts computers which are sitting unused in
people’s
garages and attics and ensures they are a functional machine by to-days
standards before giving them to the people who need them.
The specifications of the machines vary depending on what is
donated but
they all come with an all care and no responsibility agreement. The
machines where working when they were turned off and that is all that
Neighbour Net guarantees. The machines are suitable for basic tasks,
word
processing and connecting to the Internet. It is unlikely that the
computer will come with speakers or a printer as working ones of these
are seldom donated.
If you have a computer you wish to drop off, or any parts
which you no
longer need, please drop them off at the Resource Centre 1047 Colombo
Street. We would like it if you could just drop off printers and parts
which are known to be working. Also Neighbour Net has no use what so
ever for faxes, answering machines and other non related computer
pieces.
If you would like your name to be put on the list for a computer please
phone the Resource Centre 374 2465 or 379 6305. The time taken to get a
computer is dependent upon several variables, the main one being the
rate at which they are donated. This does vary a great deal. Some weeks
several arrive and others none.
